Manifestation Experiences

Interpretation of Tongues

Interpretation of tongues is the reported experience of receiving and communicating the meaning of a message spoken in tongues so the gathered church can understand and be strengthened.

1 Corinthians 12 describes manifestations of the Spirit given for the common good, distributed by the Spirit according to His will. These results reflect reported experience only — never verified supernatural causation, and never permanent possession.

Scripture

Scripture: Berean Standard Bible (BSB)

1 Corinthians 12:4–11

Interpretation accompanies various kinds of tongues among the Spirit's manifestations.

1 Corinthians 14:5, 12–13

Interpretation turns otherwise private speech toward the building up of the church.

1 Corinthians 14:26–28

Public tongues should be limited, ordered, and silent when no interpreter is present.

Creation to restoration

Its place in the Bible's one story

God made creation good and humanity for life in His presence, but sin brought disorder, suffering, deception, and death. Israel's prophets looked toward the day when God's Spirit would be poured out and His saving reign would break in. Jesus announced that Kingdom and demonstrated it through Spirit-empowered words and works, then defeated sin and death through the cross and resurrection. The Spirit now gives foretastes of that coming restoration for the common good, while the church still waits, prays, tests, and hopes for the day when God's Kingdom is fully revealed.

Interpretation makes a public contribution understandable so the community can weigh it and receive any genuine encouragement it carries.

Recognizing it wisely

An interpretation should be offered humbly and weighed like other spiritual contributions. It need not be a word-for-word translation, but it must not be treated as unquestionable or used to direct people coercively.
