Manifestation Experiences

Tongues

Tongues is the reported experience of speaking or praying in a language not learned by the speaker, understood to be enabled by the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12 describes manifestations of the Spirit given for the common good, distributed by the Spirit according to His will. These results reflect reported experience only — never verified supernatural causation, and never permanent possession.

Scripture

Scripture: Berean Standard Bible (BSB)

1 Corinthians 12:4–11

Various kinds of tongues are among manifestations distributed by the Spirit as He determines.

Acts 2:1–13

At Pentecost the Spirit enables speech understood across languages as God's mighty works are proclaimed.

1 Corinthians 14:1–19, 26–28

Paul distinguishes personal prayer from public use and requires interpretation when tongues address the gathering.

Creation to restoration

Its place in the Bible's one story

God made creation good and humanity for life in His presence, but sin brought disorder, suffering, deception, and death. Israel's prophets looked toward the day when God's Spirit would be poured out and His saving reign would break in. Jesus announced that Kingdom and demonstrated it through Spirit-empowered words and works, then defeated sin and death through the cross and resurrection. The Spirit now gives foretastes of that coming restoration for the common good, while the church still waits, prays, tests, and hopes for the day when God's Kingdom is fully revealed.

Tongues may serve personal prayer and, with interpretation, contribute to the gathered church. It witnesses that prayer and mission depend on the Spirit rather than human ability.

Recognizing it wisely

Tongues is not a badge of maturity or a required proof of receiving the Spirit. Public practice should follow biblical order, include interpretation, avoid pressure or imitation, and make room for believers with different experiences.
